The M16A1 has only been spotted on the front of the official French Xbox 360 magazine and not in actual ingame footage from the GameTrailers. However, it does make sense for the rifle to make it into Black Ops, knowing over 100,000 of them were adopted by the US Army and Air Force by 1963. The original design was based on the 7.62mm AR-10 developed by Eugene Stoner. The US Army required a more lightweight alternative to the heavy AR-10, which resulted in the development of the Armalite-15, or AR-15. Within three years, Colt Manufacturing Company started mass producing the (experimental) XM16E1. Unfortunately, the rifle didn’t live up to its promising design, and performed poorly under the harsh conditions troops encountered in Vietnam. Numerous changes were made to its design to counter the problems with weapon jammings and by 1967, the XM16E1 became a standard issue US rifle, and was now designated as the M16A1.
