In 1979, a shortened carbine variant of the AKS-74 was adopted into service with the Soviet Army: the AKS-74U, which in terms of tactical deployment, bridges the gap between a sub machine gun and an assault rifle. In Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, it was named AK-74u and had many similarities to assault rifles with the sway, mobility and penetration of the assault rifle, but with the moving and ADS speed of sub machine guns. The 'u' designation at the end of the weapon name effectively means 'укороченный' - Russian for 'shortened', and pronounced as 'Ukorochenniy'.
